What is Shiatsu?

The style of bodywork that I practice is ‘Shiatsu’.  Shiatsu is an Asian style of bodywork that evolved from the perspectives and teachings of Chinese acupuncture. Acupuncture brings to the process of healing the concept of rejuvenating the ‘vital energy’ in our bodies so that our organs are empowered to function optimally, thereby promoting health and well-being. 

Shiatsu uses touch (fingers, palms, elbows, knees) along with spiritual and mental intention to contact and move this vital energy.  A Shiatsu Session is received wearing loose comfortable clothing while lying on a futon or similarly soft surface on the floor while the Shiatsu Therapist works around your body. My touch is firm to gentle~~you choose!  We work together to create a great session for you where you feel refreshed, renewed and rejuvenated. 

Shiatsu is a cross between a relaxation massage and ‘energy work’.  ‘Energy work’ refers to techniques that focus on balancing of the flow of vital energy through the body.  This vital energy is also referred to as chi (China), ki (Japan) and prana (India).  Repeated sessions can raise your awareness of the movement of the energy flow in your own body. 

The benefits of a Shiatsu Session include relief of aches and pains, emotional relaxation, more energy and a sense of ‘feeling oneself’. Most people leave a session pain-free and with a heightened sense of well-being.
